What is the present status in India

What is the present status in India? I beleive that there is tremendous growth in the subscriber base from the 4 million odd in Dec.03.
Is there a critical mass of subscriber which will usher in E commerce in India?
I read a news item today which says that the total tickets purchased from Railways web portal is doubling every year.
