Broadband players need to come forward

Hello friends I am again back to post a comment after a gap of nearly 1 year…I feel in order to really see the Broadband grow exponentially all the Broadband players need to come forward and form a consortium so that the common man is really benefited. In a country like China, everyone has an internet access by way of inexpensive means viz. Dial up/Cable Broadband but when we still look at India we are far away from those numbers why is it so??? All the vendors who offer CPE’s (Customer Premise Equipments) for this kind of services need to lower down their entry costs which would in turn be a direct benefit to the end user.

Also its high time that other means for Broadband access should be explored viz. PLC communications, Wireless etc which should be more affordable in real sense. Now also these kind of technologies are just limited to Urban/Metro areas and people in Villages who still struggle hard for Food/Shelter/Clothing are deprived of these benefits…

More and more user friendly schemes have to be planned particularly targeted at Village areas; may be any Broadband player can come forward and bundle the entire hardware along with their services so that in real sense Broadband policy could be seen benefiting the masses. In a nutshell its would be a joint effort from all the Telecom players as well as all the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers who can jointly come forward to make a mark like when they previously exploited the Analog/Digital voice and access requirements and with this all the villages saw a huge penetration of phones may it be Wireline or wireless..

Come-on operators come forward and do something it hightime to show the world that we too can do it.

There is NO broadband access service in India

Someone said broadband access service in India is pathetic. Wrong. There is NO broadband access service in India. 256kbps does not make broadband. In the bellwether USA (at least, for Internet access services), 256kbps comes in what is termed as the “Narrowband service” range. Narrowband is rides atop a voice-grade vehicle. ISDN is a Narrowband service. Although the terms defy exact definition (not even the FCC is consistent in this regard), it is generally accepted that Narrowband access service is between 56 kbps and 1 Mbps and Broadband is above 1 Mbps (broadband maybe delivered via regular copper twisted pair - although more robust/closer to home/free of crap - or coaxial or fiber or wireless). There are ofcourse some (particularly the demanding geeks like us) who would push it even further by qualifying broadband access as something that not only delivers 1 meg+ but is also “always on” and “2-way”.
Coming back to the point about TRAI, they are just a bunch of tired old goons that are just “safehoused” for their service to the government - not to the people. Despite the occasional jaunts to ITU in Geneva, these grimy bureaucrats don’t really listen and learn there. We know why they go there. We are given shit and we have no choice. Pretty much like our film censor board. But we never complain about the bollywood, tollywood, etcwood trash, do we? We get what we pay for…. All the “Rung de Bas…” is just opium, isn’t it?

he moved to another city just to get airtel

yeah dude, i “frantically” started searching for online forums/blogs/sites back in nov 2004 when i found out bsnl was about to launch dataone in jan! the first one i went to was the silly broadband.org.in site
started visiting broadbandforum.in that time (before the forum was on that domain) and started visiting broadbandblog.in as soon as you got it up and it was mentioned on that forum
this broadband thing is “near and dear” to me too; it was apparent there would be a delay in the launch in pune by a few months, so i quit my job and moved to blore just so i wouldn’t miss out on bsnl’s unlimited period LOL (not really, that’s an exaggeration, but just a bit)
that’s kinda like what sushubh did, isnt it? he moved to another city just to get airtel? hehehe

Hardware costs aren’t much.

Yeah. Hardware costs aren’t much. We can explore options for community PC’s and all running Linux. My favourite model is Thick server- thin client. This only makes it important to upgrade the server as and when necessary.
How much computing ower you need? 486 with 5 MB RAM to run BSD. 65 MB hard drive to run linux under Command line.
Mars ROVER used only 4hz…yes 4 HERTZ to transmit those pics. It never needed any version coming from Redmond.
In anycase, Linux is the answer. Or BSD> Cost effective, secure, scalable, idiot proof and FREE for all times to come. THis thin client can cost roughly 6000-7000 per terminal for upto 25 terminals. It makes sense. Glorious sense. Csts can be brought down by using older systems. I shall explore in detail in a later post.

digital divide

“digital divide” is another cool topic that can mix with the broadband topic
just imagine, a 256 kbps affordable (Rs 250/- per month seems like a good start) connection without data transfer limits (or some reasonable limit, if any, and certainly not the ridiculous 400 MB per month), so you can download not just all the free software you want, but also things like free open university courses, like you have at ocw.mit.edu - MIT open courseware
combine that with your SIMputer or one of “$100? PCs… and that’s one small step for mankind to cross that digital divide hehe
so, to recap today’s lesson… mix one part affordable high-quality broadband, with one part affordable high-tech piece of hardware (broadband+simputer), and you have a delicious cocktail full of knowledge and intellectual horsepower. and this is a cocktail all the school kids under 21 can enjoy and benefit from.
(ps: as you can tell, i ain’t no shakespeare)

here you go

here you go:
http://broadbandforum.in/index.php?showtopic=4337&view=findpost&p=43671
instead of people haphazardly contacting these people willy-nilly, wouldn’t it be neater if you gather/organise the message and send it to the media people you are in contact with? let them review the scenario and think about how they want to present it on TV…
it will be a massive win for the consumer (you n me) if this whole ‘broadband starvation’ topic gets mainstream (common man) awareness
it doesn’t have to be a big splash, like some shocking expose or anything… let it at least start off somewhere, maybe a small item on one of the tech shows (Connekt on IBN, Tech Show on CNBC, Gadget Guru or NDTV, then there’s headlines today) who knows if they decide to do a “themes” or series, call it “Broadband India”, where every week they pick a subtopic to discuss.
i’ll be so happy if this topic starts to gradually come up on say CNBC or their other CNN/IBN channel
