Asianet

Hi
Anyone heard about a broadband service provider in Kerala? Its name is Asianet. It is the crappest of all broadband services.

what do make of a recent announcement

Hey Abhishek, what do make of a recent announcement in Chennai by Minister Maran that broadband now, i.e., from January 2007 will be truly fast and we should now say goodbye to speeds of 256 kbps and look forward to 512 kbps and more. Nothing in life is ever going to be free, but as a consumer i would say as long as the service is good and reliable and the charges reasonable(who decides that???) we should not be too pessimistic about the issue. You never know you might get someone a la what Laloo has done with the Railways.
Just a thought.

Singapore has now started free broadband in public places

Singapore has now started free broadband in public places in CBD areas and high density areas. the speed is 512 KBPS and it would be free for 3 years. People who want a higher speed need to sign up with the operators by paying monthly fee. the government has carefully excluded residential localities from this free wifi. it would be interesting to see how this experiment takes shape.

I shall follow it up on a post later.

There are a lot other places that are latching on to free wifi. I shall follow it up on a post later.

There are lot of issues here

There are lot of issues here. As I mentioned, even “free” doesn’t attract many customers. As for the “resonable” charges, it is very difficult to fathom the exact quantum of payments. We had been promised the moon and what we got was peanuts.
In my opinion, I wouldn’t hinge much importance to what Maran says. His appeal is limited to his constituency and he remains a frigging cog in the scheme of the things.
As for the so called “turn around” by Lalu of the railways, it is a media created hype. It was preceded by full page advertisements initially and then likes of Times of India picked up the “story” with others following suit. Railways remains one of the most important customers for it’s numerous advertisements for tenders and that’s the bread and butter of the newspapers.
The boffins in IIM-A are assholes to the core. Enough said about them. If I were really smart, I wouldn’t have been a doctor!
